Cross Stitch for Beginners

Cross stitch has made a comeback in the last few years, with major retailers selling inexpensive kits for beginners. Out of all the needlecrafts, it’s not only one of the easiest to master but it also has numerous benefits on the body and mind. Even a small motif can offer hours of mental stimulation, keeping the mind focused on the simple stitches and subsequently reducing stress and anxiety. It also keeps the fingers and arms mobile without being too physically strenuous or taxing. Ideal for beginners or those seeking to refresh their knowledge.

COURSE OUTLINE

Students will be required to purchase a cross stitch kit that includes aida fabric with a printed motif, embroidery floss and embroidery needle (can be found at Kmart, Target, Spotlight, Lincraft and Amazon).

• The basics of the cross stitch and back stitch
• Following a cross stitch design and colour chart on plain and printed aida fabric
• Knowing when and how to split embroidery floss
• Techniques for working in large blocks of colour and smaller sections or lines

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

1. Know how to make and implement the cross stitch and back stitch
2. Follow a cross stitch design and colour chart
