About Us

Established in 1913, WEA Sydney is one of Australia’s oldest independent adult education providers, supporting lifelong learning, public discussion, and community participation for more than a century.

More than 110 years of adult education

From public lectures and study circles in the early twentieth century to today’s diverse programs across humanities, languages, arts, technology, and vocational education, WEA Sydney has remained committed to accessible lifelong learning for the Sydney community.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide access to high quality, stimulating and varied activities which promote learning, develop knowledge, and encourage participation in democratic society. Within our program we place special emphasis on providing opportunities for the serious and objective study of the arts, sciences and humanities, including languages.

We are committed to

  • Excellence in all aspects of our work
  • Students participating in their own education and in WEA's democratic management structure
  • Facilitating access for all who seek to take part in our activities

We believe that WEA activities are valuable both to individuals in their personal lives and in their role as citizens within a democratic society, and therefore benefit the broader community.

Educational Policy Statement

  • Our aim is to provide opportunities for adults to engage in the serious and objective study of the arts, humanities, sciences and wider cultural and social issues.
  • We offer alternative courses where they contribute to the overall wellbeing of WEA Sydney, including courses that support our broader educational program.
  • We believe that quality education involves competent and dedicated tutors, well-chosen material and open discussion.
  • We consider the selection of tutors crucial to achieving and maintaining our educational aims.
  • We are devoted to achieving excellence in all aspects of our educational work.
  • We encourage systematic work and wide-ranging reading and study outside the classroom.
  • We are independent and impartial, promoting no particular political, social or religious viewpoint.
  • We welcome diverse perspectives and value freedom of thought, discussion and expression.
  • All courses are open to the public, although some activities may occasionally target particular educational needs within the community.
