Composing Landscape with Light and Shadow
We will explore the drawings and paintings of one of Europe’s premier landscape artists of the past, Gaspard Dughet. Study his poetic use of light and shadow (chiaroscuro), aerial perspective and landscape composition. Then apply these skills to drawing Sydney’s natural environment.

COURSE OUTLINE

Over these two classes we will learn to conceive of landscape composition in terms of both its underlying structure and its broad tonal masses. - Centennial Park excursion
- We will study Gaspard Dughet ink wash drawings to further examine tonal masses and composition in the landscape.
- We will study Gaspard Dughet tree drawings in black chalk. Students will bring in a photograph of a tree with water to appropriate the skills learnt from the study.
- We will study Gaspard Dughet tree drawings in ink wash. Students will bring in a photograph of a tree to appropriate the skills learnt from the study.
- Royal Botanic Gardens excursion
- We will consolidate what we have learnt, with a final study of composition and the landscape in ink wash and white gouache.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Visually analyse and deconstruct an Old Master landscape drawing, in order to apply the skills observed to a drawing practice.
- Gain a knowledge of composition and the role of both linear forms and masses of light and shade, as essential contributors to its harmony.
- Gain an ability to employ ink washes to describe tonality and atmosphere, both as observed in an Old Master drawing and then within the landscape.
MATERIALS LIST
- Oil based black chalk PITT pastel pencil (or alternative brand – no charcoal pencils)
- Black chalk stick
- Eraser, Stanley knife
- A3 or A4 sketch book suitable for ink wash / watercolour
- White gouache
- 2x pointed round watercolour brushes. Size 6 and 8.
- Indian ink
IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
