Discovery of Shipwrecks around Australia and Ongoing Mysteries

There have been many fascinating shipwreck discoveries around Australia. In this course we examine significant finds such as the wreck of the Dutch ship Vergulde Draeck, wrecked in 1656, and found 303 years later in 1963. We look at the discovery of the HMAS Sydney, and unsolved mysteries such as the Mahogany Ship on the Victorian Coast.

  • The wreck of the Vergulde Draeck (1656) and its discovery (1963)
  • The tragedy of the HMAS Sydney (1941): finding the wreck (2008)
  • The mystery of the Mahogany ship: an early Dutch or Spanish wreck on the East Coast?

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
