Learn Intermediate French Through Podcasts: Listen, Summarise, and Share

This course is designed for intermediate learners (B1–B2) who want to enhance their listening and speaking abilities through authentic French audio content. Over 9 weeks, students will explore different podcasts, develop strategies for understanding spoken French, and learn how to summarise, react to, and present podcast episodes. Recommended podcasts for this course include:

  • Journal en français facile (RFI)
  • Transfert (Slate)
  • Change ma vie
  • InnerFrench

COURSE OUTLINE

Each week students present a podcast summary (2–3 mins) with the intent to increase this to 4–5 mins by the end of the course. The audience (made up of fellow students) asks simple follow-up questions, repeat or write down interesting words as well as provide feedback. At the start of the course, the tutor will model how to add a short opinion or reaction to their summaries.

  • Icebreaker & introductions; Overview of podcast resources
  • How to take notes while listening; How to organise a good spoken summary
  • Group practices: Listen to a short podcast excerpt & write a summary together; How to ask simple questions about your topic
  • Discussions: What similarities did we hear?
  • Pronunciation practice (common French sounds)
  • How to use some new words in a short dialogue
  • Reflections: What was easy/difficult?

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Understand the main ideas and details in French-language podcasts.
  2. Use listening strategies to follow complex spoken content.
  3. Express opinions and respond to podcast content orally and in writing.
  4. Structure and deliver a clear, engaging oral presentation about a podcast.
  5. Develop confidence in listening to and using authentic French media.
