Latin Advanced 5 - Online

This is a continuation from Latin Advanced 4. Students will are now equipped to intensify their study of Latin literature by continuing their study of two of the main authors of Classical Latin literature, Cicero and Virgil. The course will enable students to apply their previous study and knowledge  of the language to the original texts as prescribed. The course will include a series of revision exercises to consolidate the grammar and syntax which they have covered in earlier courses. The course will also explore the cultural and social context in which the texts were written, including their historical and political significance.

  • Virgil, Aeneid II, edited by R. H. Jordan (Bristol Classical Press, 1999)

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Two Latin texts, one verse, the other prose as per textbooks
  • Weekly revision of syntax and grammar through written exercises
  • Analysis of historical backgrounds, examining the conditions in which the texts were written
  • Different interpretations of textual analysis, both approached through translation and class discussion

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Read and understand a Latin text of the appropriate level.
  2. Demonstrate the skills, vocabulary and attitudes required for the reading of Latin.

LANGUAGE CLASS TRANSFER POLICY

If you are a new WEA Student and enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
