Gagauzia and Transnistria in Moldova
Despite its small size Moldova includes an autonomous region (Gagauzia) and a breakaway republic (Transnistria or Pridnestrovie). Moldovan Republic granted Turkic speaking, Christian Orthodox people, the Gagauz, a limited autonomy in 1994. In 2024, Gagauzia said it would exercise its right to secede and form an independent state if Moldova becomes a part of Romania. Transnistria on the other hand does not regard itself as part of Moldova and it has its own flag, parliament, government and currency. This lecture will examine the current status of these two entities.
