Continuing Instability in Syria - WEA Sydney

Continuing Instability in Syria

The ongoing conflicts in Syria despite regime change, or because of regime change, potentially may envelop Israel and Türkiye. Both Iran and Russia are no longer major players in the Syrian theatre. The recent massacres of Alawis, Christians and Druzes have signalled the intention of the jihadist groups who have taken over Syria, ending the oppressive regime of Assad. While the interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa may not be supporting the massacres, his grip on the jihadist groups is precarious. The internal community rushed to celebrate the regime change but the future for non-Sunni Muslim and non-Arab communities in Syria remains uncertain.
