Explore the world of colour with pastels. Simple to apply, this enjoyable medium has endless possibilities. Through a series of drawing exercises, still-life, portrait and landscape studies, you’ll learn to improve your perception of colour and drawing ability. Rich and vibrant, or soft and delicate, pastels are an excellent bridge between drawing and painting, or valuable as a medium in itself. Suitable for Beginners to Advanced.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introduction to chalk pastels through texture and colour mixing exercises
  • Introduction to oil pastels through texture exercises
  • Exercises in using tonal contrast
  • Exercise in how to draw and paint Still life in pastels
  • Exercise in how to draw and paint a Landscape in Pastels
  • Exercise in how to draw an animal in Pastels
  • Introduction to Life painting – exercises in drawing and painting the figure in pastels
  • Introduction to Portraiture- exercise in drawing and painting the portrait in pastels

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Learn how to use chalk and oil pastels and know the difference between the two media
  2. Learn a variety of textural techniques
  3. Learn how to depict various subjects such as still life, landscape and the human figure in these media
  4. Learn about colour mixing, tonal contrast and composition

  • A4 Drawing Pad
  • 1x Sheet of Toned Pastel Paper
  • White Pencil Eraser
  • Kneadable Eraser)
  • Chalk Pastels – The absolute minimum of colours are White, Black, Yellow Ochre, Bright Yellow, Dark Blue, light blue ,Purple, Orange, Pink, Green, Brown, Warm red, cool red.
  • HB, 2B Pencil
  • Coloured Pencils
  • Set of cheap oil pastels
  • Wet Wipes
  • Woolworths Home Brand Hairspray
  • Workable Fixative

IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials.
