Gold Rush!

We look at the fascinating era of the Victorian gold rushes and the men and women who played their parts. We visit the Ophir diggings in NSW and the Sovereign Hill outdoor museum in Victoria. He we encounter life as it was on the gold fields and explore the history of the Eureka uprising at Ballarat.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Sovereign Hill – Depicts Ballarat's first ten years after the discovery of gold there in 1851.
  • Gold – Has been highly valued throughout history and is still today.
  • Entertainment – Bars, saloons, boxing tournaments, gambling and theatre were popular.
  • Chinese settlement – The Chinese had their own precinct in the gold towns.
  • Panning for gold – Many people still pan for gold in creeks and waterways in Australia.
