Kenwood House, London - Art & Storied Past

Kenwood House, on Hampstead Heath, is famed for its magnificent art collection and storied past. The art includes paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Gainsborough, and many Tudor marvels. The history of Kenwood House focuses on its former inhabitant, the 1st Earl of Mansfield, a pivotal figure in the fight for slave abolition and his great-niece, Dido Elizabeth Belle, a young woman of colour brought up in Georgian aristocracy. The elegant library, with its exquisite ceiling paintings, is a testament to the architectural finesse of Robert Adam. This talk explores the art, and social history of this magnificent house.
