The Path to the Indonesian Declaration of Independence
The Indonesian Independence movement began with the anti-colonialist student groups that formed in the 1900s in both the Netherlands and in Indonesia, and the formation of the Indonesian National Party led by Soekarno in 1927. The Indonesian Youth Congress of 1928 declared that the Dutch East Indies should be one nation, Indonesia, with one language, Indonesian.
It was the Japanese invasion of the Dutch East Indies in 1942 and its subsequent surrender in 1945 that led to the Indonesian Declaration of Independence from Dutch rule on 17 August, 1945.
