The ongoing conflicts in the Caucasus do not only involve Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia but also envelope Russia and Türkiye and potentially Iran. The area is characterised by geopolitical instability. The Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, two break away regions in Georgia, the Zangezur line project to connect mainland Azerbaijan with the exclave Nakhchivan going through Armenia, Türkiye’s ambition for regional control, Russia’s involvement and Iran’s anxiety about her own Azeri population sketches out a complicated geopolitical terrain. The lecture will review and analyse these conflicts.
