Mojo Working - A Night of Chicago Blues

Chicago Blues is the most popular type of Blues Music. It migrated from the rural south to urban Chicago by people who were looking for a better life. This short course will explore its history and the major artists such as Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Sunny Boy Williamson 1 & 2, and Westside Bluesmen such as Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, and Freddie King who were so influential in the development of Rock and Roll and American Popular Music. This will be a memorable evening of great music.

• The transition from the country blues of Mississippi to Chicago; The blues becomes electrified
• The early artists Robert Nighthawk, Sonny Boy Williamson 1 & 2, Big Joe Williams and others
• The Blues band: Muddy Waters and Howling Wolf
• The West Side style: Buddy Guy, Freddie King and Otis Rush
• The modern Chicago Blues, Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield and others like BB and Albert King

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

1. Review the history of Chicago Post-War Electric Blues which became part of the British Invasion who took electric blues and made it Blues-Rock.
2. Learn the background of the music’s structure and how if evolved from Country Blues, Slide Guitar and solo performers.
3. Understand the background of the Blues which led to the Civil Rights Movement and Soul Music.
4. Hear and understand the development and styles of the major artists who were the main exponents of this music.
