Discovering Juneteenth - WEA Sydney

Discovering Juneteenth

Until recently, ‘Juneteenth’ was largely unknown outside African-American communities in the United States. It is now an official national holiday and has become known around the world. It began among former slaves in Texas as a celebration of their emancipation from slavery. From Texas, Juneteenth spread to black communities in other regions, its spread largely unnoticed by their white compatriots. The history of Juneteenth reveals much about the experience of race in the United States and how this has changed over time.
