Discover the beauty of medieval manuscript art through decorative lettering and the art of gilding. Learn traditional techniques and create your own illuminated letter.

Inspired by the magnificent manuscripts of medieval Europe, this practical course introduces the art of the illuminated letter. Participants will explore decorative letter forms, manuscript design and the techniques of applying gold through both traditional and modern methods of gilding. Drawing inspiration from European manuscripts of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the course combines historical appreciation with hands-on creative practice. Suitable for beginners and anyone interested in calligraphy, manuscript art and traditional craft techniques.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introduction to Medieval Illumination by studying historical manuscripts of the time.
  • Introduction to the decorative letter forms and designs of this period.
  • Understanding the art of gilding by studying various glues or sizes used in both modern and traditional techniques.
  • Application of gold

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Have an understanding of the history of the Medieval Illuminated Letter
  • Be able to draw a letter design from this period and apply gold

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Materials list for students:

  • Pencil for drawing
  • Tracing paper
  • Layout paper
  • Ruler
  • Hot Pressed water colour paper- an A4 or A3 size
  • If choosing to paint a palette for mixing paint
  • Gouache – a selection of colours of your choice. For those wishing to re-create a traditional design red, blue, green, black and white are generally useful.
  • Paintbrushes – ideally size 2 and 000 but bring what you have.
  • Old brushes for mixing paint
  • Water jar
  • Paper towel
  • Coloured pencils or gel pens if not working with paint.

The tutor will provide gold transfer leaf, all glues or sizes and burnishers for use.

The cost for this is $10 per student.
