Extend your collage practice in an advanced studio environment focused on composition, experimentation and individual project development. Explore more complex approaches to collage, including abstraction, storytelling, colour relationships, assemblage, three-dimensional work and small-scale installation, while drawing inspiration from a range of artists and contemporary practices. Designed for students who have completed at least one year of Colour & Collage: Beginners and Continuers, or have equivalent experience, the course combines short presentations with studio work, discussion and reflection. You will be encouraged to work with increasing independence, test ideas and materials, and develop a more confident and individual creative approach.

ART MATERIALS

• 2B pencil and small notebook
• Scissors
• UHU glue stick or similar
• A4 smooth watercolour paper, approximately 185gsm, or similar
• A personal collection of coloured, printed and found papers and other materials suitable for collage
• Optional: scalpel or snap-off knife, metal ruler and cutting mat, for students already confident using these tools
• Additional materials may be recommended as individual assemblage or three dimensional projects develop.

IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.

COURSE OUTLINE

• Investigate the work and ideas of artists working with collage and related practices, which may include Robert Rauschenberg, Martha Rosler, Madonna Staunton and Karla Dickens.
• Explore collage in relation to contemporary art practices including assemblage & environmental art based on reuse and repurposing.
• Extend practical experimentation with materials, processes, imagination and storytelling through individual and guided studio projects.
• Develop more sophisticated applications of the elements and principles of art and design in visual composition.
• Explore colour relationships and palettes as intentional components of individual artworks.
• Experiment with representation, abstraction, chance and intuition as creative strategies.
• Reflect on works in progress through discussion, critique and evaluation.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

• Apply advanced principles of composition, colour and visual design when developing individual collage works
• Develop and refine independent creative projects through sustained experimentation, reflection and informed artistic decision-making
• Further understand collage as a contemporary art practice beyond the 2 dimensional
