Composing Photographs

Improve the design of your photographs by learning how to see the various design structures, elements, principles and ratios that are involved in constructing a picture. Sensitize yourself to the aesthetic. Appreciate the tools of design for greater personal expression and visual impact in your own photography and in the appreciation of the art of photography. Analyse the work of the fine art masters of photography in practical class composition exercises. Photographic assignments are set to be completed for class discussion/critique. No camera expertise is necessary. Learn how to “look” with a camera tablet or phone.

  • Analyse the work of the fine art masters of photography in practical class composition exercises, identifying their use of design.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Discover and implement the essential Design Structures, Elements, Principles and Golden Ratios in your own photography as well as identify the use of these in the work of photographers
  2. Make more interesting choices in the placement of your subject and centre of interest
  3. Improve the aesthetics of your photographs
