Begin your journey into Middle Egyptian, the classical language of ancient Egypt. This course introduces one of the world’s most recognisable scripts and gives you a practical foundation in the key principles of Egyptian grammar.
Using exercises drawn from authentic ancient texts, you’ll start building confidence in reading and translating short phrases and sentences. Ideal for complete beginners, this course requires no previous knowledge of the Egyptian language.

COURSE OUTLINE
- History of the Egyptian language
- Scripts and signs: introducing the alphabet
- Grammar building blocks: gender and number, nouns, pronouns, and adjectives
- Building phrases: expressing possession, describing nouns
- First sentences: non-verbal sentences
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Recognise Egyptian alphabets
- Use tools such as a sign-list and dictionaries to transliterate and translate Egyptian signs and words
- Understand basic grammar principles such as gender and number
- Construct noun phrases
- Read non-verbal sentences
