Australia's Convict World Heritage Sites

A well illustrated introduction to the 11 components sited within the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage property: 4 in NSW, 5 in Tasmania, 1 in WA, and Norfolk Island. A possible additional site will also be covered.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • New South Wales: Old Government House and Domain (Parramatta), Hyde Park Barracks (Sydney), Cockatoo Island Convict Site (Sydney) and Old Great North Road (near Wiseman’s Ferry)
  • Norfolk Island: Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area
  • Tasmania: Port Arthur Historic Site (Tasman Peninsula), Cascades Female Factory (Hobart), Darlington Probation Station (Maria Island), Coal Mines Historic Site (Tasman Peninsula, via Premadeyna) and Brickendon and Woolmers Estates (near Longford)
  • Western Australia: Fremantle Prison
  • The Parramatta Female Factory: a potential addition or separate World Heritage property will also be covered

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Have a knowledge of this Australian World Heritage property
  2. Understand more about Australia’s convict history
  3. Perhaps have a desire to visit some of these sites
