Songwriting Workshop for Beginners

This course offers practical tips to begin writing a song (or to finish existing songs). We will review the formation of the modern song and the various types of song structures, and apply different techniques to your own compositions. You will learn to compose your own tunes using creative prompts. Students can write solo compositions or explore co-writing with other students in the class (optional). No musical experience necessary. No need to bring instruments, just bring your passion for music. Existing songwriters will gain valuable tips to polish and finish their songs!

COURSE OUTLINE

• Overview of the formation of the modern song and the various types of songs that have emerged
• Explore song structure and how different structures drive the song’s impact
• Illustrate techniques of the songwriting craft through analysis of some very memorable songs
• Apply songwriting techniques to your own song
• Creative prompts in each lesson to ensure students are writing lyrics and ideas for songs
• Songwriting exercises as solo composers and/or paired with other students if desired
• Opportunity to present any song ideas / completed songs in the final lesson (optional)
