Frequently Asked Questions | Vocational Training

Here are the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions by current and prospective Vocational Training students. If there is a question that is not covered by the below, please contact us.

Our courses are designed for flexibility and accessibility in mind with 24/7 access via an online learning portal. You can study the course at your own pace with access to trainer support when needed. No mandatory classroom attendance or compulsory vocational placement is required.

A VET qualification confirms a learner has achieved the required competencies and learning outcomes set out in an endorsed training package or accredited course. It is issued only when a learner has met all assessment requirements and all required units are completed. An ASQA qualification must:

  • Be listed on the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)
  • Be developed from an endorsed training package or accredited course
  • Be delivered and assessed by an ASQA-registered training organisation (RTO)
  • Certify that the learner has demonstrated competence against all required units

Skill sets are smaller groupings of units from the full qualification. They focus on specific job functions and can provide a faster pathway to meet compliance requirements. For example, a construction supervisor who needs to assess apprentices may only require the Assessor Skill Set.

Key Benefits of Skill Sets

  • Nationally recognised
  • Faster to complete
  • Targeted to specific job roles

Common examples include Certificates (I, II, III, IV), Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas.

Units of Competency are the individual building blocks of the qualification. Each unit represents a specific skill or capability. Examples include:

  • Deliver training sessions
  • Assess learners
  • Design learning programs

Choose a Skill Set if you:

  • Only need a specific function (e.g. assessing)
  • Already have training experience
  • Need a quick compliance upgrade

Choose the full qualification if you:

  • Want broader career opportunities
  • Plan to both deliver and assess training
  • Want to meet full industry expectations

Important: While skill sets may meet minimum requirements for some roles, many RTOs prefer or require the full TAE40122 qualification.

Assessment tasks may include:

  • Written knowledge questions
  • Practical training delivery sessions
  • Assessment design projects
  • Observation or recorded demonstrations
Note: You may be required to record or simulate training sessions.

You must:

  • Have vocational competency in your industry (experience or qualifications)
  • Be able to demonstrate skills in the area you intend to teach
  • Have sound language, literacy, numeracy, and digital skills
Support may be available where needed.

Yes. WEA Sydney offers Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for eligible students.

RPL allows you to have your existing skills, knowledge, and experience assessed against the requirements of the qualification—without needing to complete all training. You may be eligible if you have:

  • Relevant industry experience
  • Previous training or qualifications
  • Experience delivering training or assessing in the workplace

What is involved in applying for RPL?

You can:

  • Provide evidence of your skills and experience (e.g. resumes, work samples, references)
  • Complete an RPL assessment process with a qualified assessor
  • Participate in a competency conversation (if required)

Outcome:

  • You may receive full or partial credit for units of competency
  • Any gaps can be completed through further training
