A mindful journey into watercolour painting, where observation, breath, and colour flow together. In this workshop, we will explore a Sydney cityscape in watercolour through a calm, step-by-step demonstrated process. Participants will learn how to respond to spontaneity, trust the flow, and gradually unfold a poetic urban story through layered washes and reflective mark-making.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  1. Understand the foundations of mindful watercolour practice.
  2. Develop confidence in painting a cityscape using loose yet intentional techniques.
  3. Apply step-by-step layering methods (light to dark washes).
  4. Explore spontaneity and controlled flow in watercolour application.
  5. Create a finished Sydney cityscape that reflects personal expression and atmosphere.

MATERIALS LIST (PLEASE BRING)

Colours:

  • Watercolour pans or individual tubes (recommended colours): Cadmium Red; Chrome Yellow; Lemon Yellow; Ultramarine Blue; Burnt Sienna; Black/Gray (Recommended brands: Winsor & Newton or Daniel Smith)

Brushes:

  • Size 4, 8, 12 and Watercolour Brush- Mop round (natural hairbrushes are effective for washes than synthetic one)

Other:

  • A3-size sketchbook/ lose sheet, 300gsm (Recommended brands: Baohong, Fabriano, Arches)
  • Napkins or paper towels
  • Water container
  • Small spray bottle (available at most art supply stores like Eckersley's or Came Art)
  • Masking tape (for stretching paper)  
  • Pencil (HB or 2B)
  • Kneadable eraser
  • Waterproof fine liner (optional for details)
  • Palette
